Scope note: Término descriptivo general que se refiere a cualquier masa de tejido que abulta o se proyecta hacia afuera o arriba desde el nivel superficial normal; es macroscópicamente visible como una estructura hemiesferoidal, esferoidal o irregular que crece desde una base poco ancha o un tallo fino. Antes se aplicaba a las neoplasias de la mucosa nasal; en la actualidad este término se utiliza para designar las protrusiones de este tipo en cualquier mucosa. (Dorland, 28a ed; Stedman, 25a ed)

Scope note: Discrete abnormal tissue masses that protrude into the lumen of the DIGESTIVE TRACT or the RESPIRATORY TRACT. Polyps can be spheroidal, hemispheroidal, or irregular mound-shaped structures attached to the MUCOUS MEMBRANE of the lumen wall either by a stalk, pedunculus, or by a broad base.
Annotation: if neoplastic, coord IM with precoord organ/neopl term (IM), otherwise coord with precoord organ/dis term (IM); COLONIC POLYPS; INTESTINAL POLYPS & NASAL POLYPS are also available
