Scope note: Órgano linfoide primario impar y asimétrico situado en el MEDIASTINO, que se extiende cranealmente en el cuello a nivel del borde inferior de la GLÁNDULA TIROIDES y caudalmente a nivel del cuarto cartílago costal. Es necesario para el normal desarrollo de la función inmunológica en etapas tempranas de la vida. En la pubertad, comienza a involucionar y gran parte del tejido es remplazado por grasa. Consta de una zona externa, la corteza, relativamente rica en linfocitos (timocitos) y una zona interna, la médula, relativamente rica en células epiteliales. El timo es el lugar de producción de los linfocitos T. (Dorland, 27th ed)
