Scope note: Principal hormona producida por la glándula tiroides. Se forma por yodación de las tirosinas (MONOYODOTIROSINA) y el acoplamiento de las yodotirosinas (DIYODOTIROSINA) en la TIROGLOBULINA. La tiroxina se libera de la tiroglobulina mediante proteólisis y se secreta en la sangre. Periféricamente, la tiroxina pierde el yodo y se convierte en TRIYODOTIRONINA, que tiene una amplia gama de efectos estimulantes en el metabolismo celular.
