Scope note: Estructura tubular pequeña que drena orina desde la vejiga. En las mujeres mide aproximadamente 3 cm de largo y se sitúa directamente por detrás de la sínfisis del pubis, por delante de la vagina. En los hombres mide aproximadamente 20 cm de largo y comienza en la vejiga, pasa a través del centro de la próstata, discurre entre las dos hojas del tejido que conecta los huesos púbicos y, finalmente, pasa a través del meato urinario del pene. En el hombre la uretra sirve de conducto para el semen durante la eyaculación y para la orina durante la micción. (Diccionario Mosby. 5a ed. Madrid: Harcourt España, 2000, p.1292)
