Scope note: La familia Cervidae comprende 17 géneros y 45 especies distribuidas casi por toda América del norte, del sur y Eurasia, la mayoría de las islas asociadas a los continentes y el norte de África. Tras su introducción por el hombre, se han establecido poblaciones salvajes de ciervos en Cuba, Nueva Guinea, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y otros lugares donde no existen de forma natural. Son esbeltos, de patas largas y se caracterizan mejor por sus astas. Su ambiente es el bosque, los pantanos, los desiertos y las tundras árticas. En general, son buenos nadadores; algunos emigran en función de las estaciones. (Walker s Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1362)
