Scope note: Pretende eliminar los sólidos en suspensión sedimentables, incluyendo la parte de la materia orgánica en suspensión gruesa, siendo predominante el mecanismo físico de sedimentación y la fase de digestión y estabilización de la materia orgánica sedimentada por la vía anaerobia. Se trata de permitir que las aguas residuales sigan a las unidades de tratamiento secundario o que eventualmente sean lanzadas en los cuerpos receptores, aunque ésta es una condición muy especial, actualmente difícil de conceder en licencias ambientales, por no cumplir el estándar mínimo de lanzamiento establecido en la legislación. Normalmente, en esta etapa se obtienen los porcentajes de remoción del 40 al 70 por ciento en los sólidos en suspensión, del 25 al 40 por ciento en la DBO y en los coliformes.
