Scope note: Afección que se caracteriza por somnolencia o coma en presencia de una infección aguda con PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM (y raramente otras especies de Plasmodium). Las manifestaciones clínicas iniciales son CEFALEAS, CONVULSIONES y alteraciones mentales, seguidas por una rápida progresión al COMA. Las características anatomopatológicas incluyen capilares cerebrales llenos de eritrocitos parasitados y múltiples focos pequeños de necrosis cortical y subcortical.
