Scope note: Especie de protozoos parásitos que se encuentran en los intestinos de humanos y de otros primates. Fue clasificado como levadura en 1912. Con los años se suscitaron interrogantes en relación con su designación. En 1967, se describieron muchas características fisiológicas y morfológicas de B. hominis que se ajustaban a la clasificación de los protozoos. Desde entonces, otros trabajos han corroborado este trabajo y en la actualidad se considera que este organismo es un protozoo parásito de los humanos que causa enfermedad intestinal con síntomas potencialmente discapacitantes.
