Scope note: Envoltura de gel laxo que rodea la célula bacteriana que se asocia con la virulencia de bacterias patógenas. Algunas cápsulas tienen un borde bien definido, mientras que otras forman una capa mucosa que se adentra en el medio. La mayoría de las cápsulas constan de polisacáridos relativamente sencillos pero hay algunas bacterias cuyas cápsulas están formadas de polipéptidos.
