Fue colonizada por vez primera en 1662 como Isla de Bourbon, pero fue rebautizada como isla de la Reunión en 1793. En 1946 se convirtió en departamento de ultramar de Francia. El nombre conmemora la reunión de los revolucionarios de Marsella con la Guardia Nacional en París en 1792.
