Scope note: Familia de serpientes extremadamente venenosas que comprende la serpiente coral, la cobra, la mamba, el búngaro común y las culebras marinas. Están ampliamente distribuidas y se encuentran en el sur de Estados Unidos, América del Sur, África, sur de Asia, Australia y las Islas del Pacífico. Los elápidos comprenden tres subfamilias: Elapinae, Hydrophiinae y Lauticaudinae. Como los vipéridos, poseen dientes en la parte frontal del maxilar superior. Las mambas de África son las serpientes más peligrosas, debido a su tamaño, velocidad y alta toxicidad de su veneno. (Goin, Goin and Zung, Introduction to Herpetology, 3d ed, p 329-33).
