Scope note: Concepto desarrollado en 1983 bajo los auspicios de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina y respaldado por ésta, con el nombre de sistemas de gestión integrada de información académica, para facilitar a los profesionales de los centros y las instituciones de ciencias de la salud el acceso adecuado a una red de conocimientos integral e integrada. Se dirige a un amplio sector de usuarios, desde administadores y cuerpo docente hasta estudiantes y clínicos, y tiene aplicaciones en la planificación, la toma de decisiones clínicas y de dirección, la enseñanza y la investigación. Da acceso a diversos tipos de bases de datos clínicas, de gestión, educacionales, etcétera, así como a bases de datos de investigación y bibliográficas. En agosto de 1992 se le cambió el nombre de sistemas de gestión integrada de la información académica por el de sistemas de gestión integrada de información avanzada para reflejar que el uso trasciende el medio académico.

It addresses a wide cross-section of users from administrators and faculty to students and clinicians and has applications to planning, clinical and managerial decision-making, teaching, and research. It provides access to various types of clinical, management, educational, etc., databases, as well as to research and bibliographic databases. In August 1992 the name was changed from Integrated Academic Information Management Systems to Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems to reflect use beyond the academic milieu.
