La premisa básica de los estudios en gemelos es que los gemelos monocigóticos, que se forman por la división de un solo óvulo fecundado, poseen genes idénticos, mientras que los gemelos dicigóticos, que se forman por la fecundación de dos óvulos por dos espermatozoides diferentes, no son genéticamente más similares que dos hermanos nacidos de dos embarazos distintos.
