Scope note: Grupo de islas en la parte central suroccidental del Pacífico, dividida en SAMOA AMERICANA y el ESTADO INDEPENDIENTE DE SAMOA (Samoa Occidental). El primer contacto europeo fue realizado en 1722 por Jacob Roggeveen, holandés. En 1768 Louis de Bougainville las dio el nombre de Islas Navigators. El nombre actual puede derivar del de un jefe local o de una palabra local que significa lugar de la moa, ave isleña en la actualidad desaparecida.
