Scope note: República que consta de un grupo de aproximadamente 100 islas e islotes en la parte occidental del Océano Pacífico. La capital es Koror. Bajo España fue administrada como parte de las islas Carolinas pero fue vendida a Alemania en 1899. Fue tomada por Japón en 1914 y por los aliados en la Segunda Guerra Mundial en 1944. En 1947 se convirtió en parte del Trust Territory de las Islas del Pacífico de los Estados Unidos y llegó a autogobernarse internamente en 1980. Obtuvo el control independiente sobre la política exterior (excepto la defensa) en 1986 y consiguió la total independencia el 1 de octubre de 1994.
