Scope note: Una de las seis proteínas homólogas que se unen específicamente a los factores de crecimiento semejantes a la insulina (SOMATOMEDINAS) y modulan sus acciones mitogénicas y metabólicas. No está completamente definida la función de esta proteína. Sin embargo, varios estudios demuestran que inhibe la unión del IGF a los receptores de la superficie celular, inhibiendo así la acción mitogénica mediada por IGF y la acción metabólica celular.
