Se presentan en forma de árboles o arbustos provistos de hojas aromáticas que a menudo poseen en su superficie un moteado glandular amarillo. Los frutos, con una sola semilla, suelen estar cubiertos de gránulos, protuberancias o capas de cera. Tienen flores pequeñas, verdosas y poco llamativas.
