Scope note: La ambaína es una glucosa que cristaliza en pequeñas agujas prismáticas y transparentes, con olor ligeramente picante y acre. Es soluble en alcohol a temperatura entre 40 y 36 grados C, y en pequeñas proporciones a temperaturas frías. Es poco soluble en agua e insoluble en éter sulfúrico y cloroformo. Puede obtenerse a partir del extracto alcohólico de las cortezas frescas de ambaína blanca (Cecropia hololeuca), perteneciente a la familia Cecropiaceae.
