Scope note: Es uno de los géneros más amplios de ALGAS PARDAS. Comprende más de 150 especies que se encuentran en las zonas tropicales, subtropicales y templadas de ambos hemisferios. Algunas especies están fijadas al fondo (bénticas) pero la mayoría flotan en mar abierto (pelágicas). Sargassum aporta un hábitat de importancia fundamental para cientos de especies de PECES, TORTUGAS e INVERTEBRADOS.
