Scope note: Tiburones de la familia Squalidae. La subfamilia Squalinae es denominada pintarroja menor y comprende ocho géneros con unas 44 especies. La pintarroja menor aparece con frecuencia en bancos, cerca de costa y son destructivas para los peces y los equipos de pesca. Su hígado es apreciado por su aceite y su carne se utiliza frecuentemente para elaborar fertilizantes. Squalus acanthias o pintarroja espinosa se utiliza ampliamente en la investigación biológica, especialmente la glándula rectal en estudios sobre equilibrio hidroelectrolítico.
