Scope note: Engrosamiento y pérdida de elasticidad de las paredes de las ARTERIAS musculares de tamaño grande y medio, con lesiones en la capa arterial más interna (ÍNTIMA ARTERIAL). Este proceso de aterogénesis incluye la retención de LIPOPROTEÍNAS ricas en colesterol y su unión a PROTEOGLICANOS en la íntima arterial, generación de moléculas proinflamatorias que atraen a los MACRÓFAGOS al espacio subendotelial, formación de CÉLULAS ESPUMOSAS y, finalmente, calcificación de la pared arterial. Estas placas arteriales (ateromas) contienen CARBOHIDRATOS, SANGRE y CALCIO.
