La Orgazniación Mundial de la Salud ha designado seis enfermedades infecciosas tropicales como abandonadas en los países industrializados que son endémicas en muchos países en desarrollo (HELMINTIASIS, LEPRA, FILARIASIS LINFÁTICA, ONCOCERQUIASIS, ESQUISTOSOMIASIS y TRACOMA).
