Scope note: Forma aguda de desnutrición que afecta generalmente a los niños, caracterizada por un peso muy bajo para la altura (por debajo de las puntuaciones -3z de los estándares medios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud), emaciación grave visible, o la aparición de EDEMA nutricional. Puede ser una causa directa o indirecta de mortalidad en los niños que sufren de DIARREA y la NEUMONÍA. No debe confundirse con el hambre, una condición en la cual el cuerpo no está recibiendo suficiente alimento, generalmente por períodos prolongados de tiempo.
