Scope note: | The community of countries where Portuguese is the official language was established in 1996 in Lisbon, Portugal, by the heads of State of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe. With its independence in 2002, East Timor became the eighth member of the community. In addition, Equatorial Guinea, the Mauricius and Senegal are observer countries associated with CPLP. Its main objectives are the political and diplomatic coordination between the Member States to strengthen their presence and the community on the international scene; the cooperation in all fields, including education, health, science and technology, defense, agriculture, public administration, communications, justice, public security, culture, sports and media; and the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language.
