Scope note: Género de la familia CORONAVIRIDAE cuyos miembros causan enfermedades respiratorias o gastrointestinales en diversos mamíferos. Los alfacoronavirus humanos incluyen el Coronavirus Humano 229E y el NL63. Todos los miembros comparten las mismas secuencias reguladoras mínimas de la transcripción de 5'-CUAAAC-3' y la mayoría poseen 1 ó 2 marcos abiertos de lectura (ORF, por sus siglas en inglés) delante, en dirección 3', del gen de la proteína N.
