Scope note: Carnívoros del género Vulpes de la familia Canidae. Hay 10 especies que se encuentran en América del Norte, Europa, Asia, y África. El zorro rojo, Vulpes vulpes, cuya coloración oscila desde el rojo amarillento hasta el rojo oscuro, negro, blanco o plateado, rivaliza con el lobo gris (Canis lupus) por la mayor distribución natural de cualquier mamífero terrestre exceptuando al hombre. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p 1050).
