Descriptor humedales construidos
Entry term(s) biofiltros (pantanos artificiales)
pantanos artificiales
FUNASA, 2018)

Tree number(s): SP4.895.141.712.406.960
Scope note: Also known as Macrophytes Floating Filters (MFF), Constructed Wetlands (CW) and also Root Zone Wastewater Treatment (RZWT), it is a process classified as a controlled wastewater ground disposal. In this treatment unit the applied effluent should at least be the post primary treatment effluent. The systems are composed by channels or shallow compartments excavated in the ground, waterproofed, filled with gravel and sand substrate, where the aquatic macrophytes are planted. The wastewater flow may be superficial, or subsurface, the latter having advantage for the lower potential for generation of odours and to avoid the appearance of mosquitoes and rats. The wetlands constructed of sub-surface runoff are subdivided as to the direction of horizontal and vertical hydraulic runoff. (Free translation from the original: Brasil. FUNASA, 2018)
