Scope note: Mamíferos solitarios, principalmente excavadores y nocturnos, del orden Pholidota. Tienen el cuerpo, la cola y la cabeza recubiertos de escamas afiladas que los protegen cuando se enrollan formando una bola al sentirse amenazados. Los pangolines, que también reciben el nombre de osos hormigueros escamosos, son mirmecófagos que se alimentan principalmente de hormigas y termitas y que se distribuyen por las zonas más cálidas de los continentes asiático y africano. Scope note: Solitary, chiefly burrowing and nocturnal mammals of the order Pholidota. They have bodies, tails and heads encased in sharp scales, which protect them when rolled up into a ball when threatened. Also called scaly anteaters, pangolins are myrmecophagous mainly eating ants and termites and are distributed in the warmer parts of the Asia and the Africa continents. Chinese pangolins are a potential intermediate DISEASE RESERVOIR of COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2.
