Las gonadotropinas principales son glicoproteínas que se sintetizan principalmente en la adenohipófisis (GONADOTROPINAS HIPOFISARIAS) y la placenta (GONADOTROPINA CORIÓNICA). En algunas especies, la PROLACTINA hipofisaria y el LACTÓGENO PLACENTARIO tienen cierta actividad luteotrópica.
