Scope note: Antigua colonia de la corona británica localizada en la costa sudeste de China, comprende la Isla de Hong Kong, la Península de Kowloon, y los Nuevos Territorios. Los tres sitios fueron cedidos a los británicos por los chinos en 1841, 1860, y 1898, respectivamente. Hong Kong retornó a China en Julio de 1997. El nombre representa la pronunciación cantonesa del chino xianggang, puerto con fragancia, de xiang, perfume y gang, puerto o bahía, al referirse a sus corrientes endulzadas por el agua dulce que proviene de un río situado al oeste.
