Scope note: Sustancias que contienen una molécula de tres anillos fusionados y que se utilizan en el tratamiento de la depresión. Estos fármacos bloquean la captación de noradrenalina y serotonina en las terminales axónicas y pueden bloquear ciertos subtipos de receptores serotoninérgicos, adrenérgicos e histaminérgicos. No obstante, no está claro de qué manera dan lugar a sus efectos antidepresivos, dado que los efectos terapéuticos suelen tardar semanas en aparecer y pueden reflejar cambios compensatorios en el sistema nervioso central.
