Scope note: Afección que se caracteriza por presentar un tipo de edema seco, de tipo céreo con depósitos anormales de mucina en la piel y en otros tejidos. Se produce por una insuficiencia funcional de la glándula tiroides, lo que lleva a un déficit de hormona tiroidea. La piel se hincha alrededor de los ojos y en los pómulos y la cara es sombría y sin expresión, con engrosamiento de la nariz y los labios. La forma congénita de la enfermedad es el CRETINISMO.

Scope note: A condition characterized by a dry, waxy type of swelling (EDEMA) with abnormal deposits of MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES in the SKIN and other tissues. It is caused by a deficiency of THYROID HORMONES. The skin becomes puffy around the eyes and on the cheeks. The face is dull and expressionless with thickened nose and lips.
