Unani Medicine is a modified Greco-Arabic medical system that originated in Greece. It is based primarily on the principles proposed by Hippocrates and Galen and was enriched by several Arab and Persian scholars, such as Avicenna. Unani Medicine is based on the Hippocratic theory of the four humors and the seven components. (Glossary of Complementary Medicine Terms of the Social Health Insurance - ESSALUD, p. 23). Unani Medicine is based on its philosophical principles and the Hippocratic concept of the balance of the four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. It amalgamates the knowledge of contemporary traditional medicine systems from Egypt, India, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Syria, and other Asian countries. It provides dietary, lifestyle, and pharmacological interventions to maintain health and prevent disease. It treats diseases by modifying essential and non-essential external and internal factors with various modes of dietary therapy, regimen therapy, pharmacotherapy, and surgery.
