Scope note: Familia del orden Rodentia que contiene 49 géneros. Algunos de los géneros más comunes son MARMOTA, que incluye a la marmota y a la marmota de Norteamérica; Sciurus, que incluye la ardilla gris (S. carolinensis) y la ardilla zorra (S. niger); Tamias, que incluye la ardilla listada oriental y occidental; y Tamiasciurus, que incluye la ardilla roja. También pertenecen a esta familia las ardillas voladoras, excepto Anomaluridae, de cola escamosa.
