Scope note: Divertículo de la cuarta bolsa faríngea del embrión, considerado por algunos como una quinta bolsa faríngea rudimentaria y por otros como un primordio tiroideo lateral. Los cuerpos ultimobranquiales de los vertebrados inferiores contienen grandes cantidades de calcitonina. En los mamíferos, los cuerpos se fusionan con la glándula tiroides y se cree que dan origen a las células parafoliculares. (Stedman, 25a ed)

Scope note: A diverticulum from the fourth pharyngeal pouch of an embryo, regarded by some as a rudimentary fifth pharyngeal pouch and by others as a lateral thyroid primordium. The ultimobranchial bodies of lower vertebrates contain large amounts of calcitonin. In mammals the bodies fuse with the thyroid gland and are thought to develop into the parafollicular cells.
