Scope note: Péptido de 13 aminoácidos producido por proteólisis de la CORTICOTROPINA, el segmento N-terminal de la ACTH. La ACTH (1-13) es amidada en el extremo C-terminal, dando lugar a ACTH (1-13)NH2, que sufre a su vez una acetilación, dando lugar a alfa-MSH en los gránulos secretores. La alfa-MSH estimula la síntesis y distribución de MELANINA en los MELANOCITOS de mamíferos y en los MELANÓFOROS de vertebrados inferiores.
