Scope note: Infecciones bacterianas de las leptomeninges y del espacio subaracnoideo, en las que con frecuencia están afectadas la corteza, los nervios craneales, los vasos sanguíneos cerebrales, la médula espinal y las raíces nerviosas. El tipo de microorganismo causal varía con la edad y con el estado clínico (por ejemplo, estados postoperatorios, de inmunodeficiencia o postraumáticos). Clínicamente se manifiesta por aparición aguda de fiebre, rigidez de nuca, alteraciones mentales, convulsiones y déficit neurológico focal. Puede ocurrir la muerte en las 24 horas posteriores al inicio de la enfermedad. En el examen anatomopatológico se observa exudado purulento en el espacio subaracnoideo e inflamación difusa de las estructuras neurales y vasculares. (Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1994, Ch24, pp. 1-5)
