Scope note: Género de serpientes de la familia VIPERIDAE, una de las víboras de fosa, denominada así por la fosita maxilar situada entre el ojo y los orificios nasales. Son serpientes americanas características. La mayoría de las 25 especies identificadas se encuentran en el suroeste de Estados Unidos y en el norte de Méjico. Varias especies se encuentran tan al norte como Canadá y el este del Mississippi, incluido el sur de los Appalaches. Se denominan así por el sonajero articulado (krotalon griego) en la punta de su cola. (Goin, Goin, and Zug: Introduction to Herpetology, 3d ed; Moore: Poisonous Snakes of the World, 1980, p335).

Scope note: A genus of snakes of the subfamily Crotalinae, having a hollowed out pit in the maxillary bone between the eye and nostril. Most of the recognized species are found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Several species are found as far north as Canada and east of the Mississippi, including southern Appalachia. They are named for the jointed rattle (Greek krotalon) at the tip of their tail. (Goin, Goin, and Zug: Introduction to Herpetology, 3d ed; Moore: Poisonous Snakes of the World, 1980, p335).
