Scope note: Género de serpientes de la familia VIPERIDAE. En la actualidad se reconocen alrededor de 30 especies, que se encuentran en Asia sudoriental y en las cadenas de islas adyacentes. La serpiente habu de Okinawa suele entrar en las casas en busca de ratas y ratones; la serpiente habu de China se encuentra a menudo en las afueras de las ciudades y en zonas agrícolas. Son muy irritables. (Moore: Poisonous Snakes of the World, 1980, p. 136)
