Plantas de la clase Filicinae, que carecen de semillas y flores. Se reproducen por esporas, que aparecen como puntos en el envés de las plumosas frondas. En clasificaciones anteriores, las Pteridofitas comprendían los licopodios, las corregüelas hembras, los helechos y diversos grupos fósiles. En clasificaciones más recientes, las pteridofitas y las espermatofitas (plantas con semillas) están clasificadas en el subreino Tracheobionta (también denominado Tracheophyta).

Scope note:

Seedless nonflowering plants of the class Filicinae. They reproduce by spores that appear as dots on the underside of feathery fronds. In earlier classifications the Pteridophyta included the club mosses, horsetails, ferns, and various fossil groups. In more recent classifications, pteridophytes and spermatophytes (seed-bearing plants) are classified in the Subkingdom TRACHEOPHYTA (also known as Tracheophyta).
