Scope note: Especie del género ALOUATTA, familia ATELIDAE, que habita en los bosques de América del Sur. Aunque a veces se los conoce como aulladores negros, solo los machos adultos tienen el pelaje negro, mientras que las hembras adultas y los animales jóvenes son de color dorado. Las especies estrechamente relacionadas A. pigra en América Central y A. nigerrima en el Amazonas también reciben el nombre de aulladores negros.
