Scope note: Afección heterogénea en la que el corazón se torna incapaz de bombear suficiente cantidad de sangre como para mantener las necesidades metabólicas del organismo. El fallo cardíaco puede deberse a defectos estructurales, anomalias funcionales (DISFUNCIÓN VENTRICULAR) o a una sobrecarga que supere su capacidad. La insuficiencia cardíaca crónica suele ser más frecuente que la insuficiencia cardíaca aguda, que es resultado de un daño súbito a la función cardíaca, como por ejemplo un INFARTO DE MIOCARDIO.

Scope note: A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.
