Scope note: Trastorno neurológico agudo caracterizado por una tríada de oftalmoplejía, ataxia y trastornos de la actividad mental o de la conciencia. Las anomalías de los movimientos oculares incluyen nistagmo, parálisis del recto externo y reducción de la mirada fija conjugada. La DEFICIENCIA DE TIAMINA y el ALCOHOLISMO crónico son afecciones asociadas. Las características patológicas incluyen hemorragias petequiales periventriculares y rotura de los neuropilos del diencéfalo y tronco encefálico. Scope note: An acute neurological disorder characterized by the triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and disturbances of mental activity or consciousness. Eye movement abnormalities include nystagmus, external rectus palsies, and reduced conjugate gaze. THIAMINE DEFICIENCY and chronic ALCOHOLISM are associated conditions. Pathologic features include periventricular petechial hemorrhages and neuropil breakdown in the diencephalon and brainstem. Chronic thiamine deficiency may lead to KORSAKOFF SYNDROME.
