Scope note:	Región del periodo de desarrollo de los SOMITOS, que contiene cierto número de arcadas bilaterales con un núcleo mesodérmico revestido por endodermo y ectodermo a ambos lados. En los vertebrados acuáticos inferiores los arcos branquiales dan lugar a las BRANQUIAS. En los vertebrados superiores los arcos forman evaginaciones y se transforman en estructuras de la cabeza y el cuello. Separando los arcos están las hendiduras o surcos branquiales.

Scope note:

A region, of SOMITE development period, that contains a number of paired arches, each with a mesodermal core lined by ectoderm and endoderm on the two sides. In lower aquatic vertebrates, branchial arches develop into GILLS. In higher vertebrates, the arches forms outpouchings and develop into structures of the head and neck. Separating the arches are the branchial clefts or grooves.
