Scope note:

Antibiótico antivírico producido por Cephalosporium aphidicola y otros hongos. Inhibe el crecimiento de las células eucarióticas y de ciertos virus animales al inhibir selectivamente la replicación celular de la ADN polimerasa II o las ADN polimerasas inducidas por virus. El fármaco puede ser de utilidad para el control de una excesiva proliferación celular en pacientes con cáncer, psoriasis u otras dermatitis, con escasos o nulos efectos adversos sobre las células que no se están multiplicando.

Scope note:

An antiviral antibiotic produced by Cephalosporium aphidicola and other fungi. It inhibits the growth of eukaryotic cells and certain animal viruses by selectively inhibiting the cellular replication of DNA polymerase II or the viral-induced DNA polymerases. The drug may be useful for controlling excessive cell proliferation in patients with cancer, psoriasis or other dermatitis with little or no adverse effect upon non-multiplying cells.
