Scope note: Denominación de dos islas en las Indias Occidentales, separadas por un estrecho canal. Su capital es Basse-Terre. Estas islas fueron descubiertas por Colón en 1493; ocupadas por los franceses en 1635; entre 1759 y 1813 pasaron a ser dominio británico en diversas ocasiones; en 1813 fueron transferidas a Suecia; y en 1816 fueron devueltas nuevamente a Francia. En el año 1946 su estatus cambió de colonia a departamento ultramarino francés. Colón le asignó su nombre en honor del monasterio de Guadalupe en España.
