Fue descubierta por Colón en 1493, pasó a ser dominio británico en 1625, siendo la primera isla de sotavento colonizada por los británicos. Posteriormente estuvo gobernada conjuntamente por los franceses e ingleses entre 1628 y 1713, tras lo cual retornó a Gran Bretaña tras el Tratado de Utrecht en 1713.
