La disfunción es multifacética y afecta a la memoria, conducta, personalidad, juicio, atención, relaciones espaciales, lenguaje, pensamiento abstracto, y otras funciones ejecutivas. La decadencia intelectual suele ser progresiva, e inicialmente se conserva el nivel de conciencia.
