Scope note: Láseres con un diodo semiconductor como medio activo. Los láseres de diodo transforman la energía eléctrica en luz usando el mismo principio del diodo emisor de luz (LED), pero con capacidad de reflexión interna, formando así un resonador en el que una luz estimulada puede reflejarse hacia atrás y hacia delante, permitiendo que se emita sólo cierta longitud de onda. La emisión de un dispositivo dado está determinada por el compuesto activo utilizado (por ejemplo, cristales de arseniuro de galio primados con aluminio o indio). Las longitudes de onda típicas son de 810, 1.060 y 1.300 nm. (UMDNS, 2005)
