Es esencial para el desarrollo de los ovarios e inhibe el FACTOR DE TRANSCRIPCIÓN SOX9 para evitar la diferenciación a testículos. También induce la APOPTOSIS en las células ováricas. Las mutaciones en el gen FOXL2 se asocian a BLEFAROFIMOSIS, ptosis y epicanto inverso (BPES con insuficiencia ovárica).
